Why is it that men always have to buy some new gadget in the airport duty free? On our last trip to Antigua for what I thought was to be a relaxing break in the sun, my husband/business partner insisted on buying a fancy laptop though we'd agreed to leave business to stew while we re-charged our batteries. A bit of a sulk on my part ensued from this purchase, as I could see that our leisure time was going to be eroded. I was right. Every morning, there he was at the wi-fi beach bar, staring at his email and dealing with the stuff we were trying to get away from. My sulk deepened. Just as a full-on huff was developing one morning, I see my husband returning from the beach bar with a look of smug triumph smeared across his face. That day he had opened his email to find an enquiry from a new business prospect in New York. Naturally it required an immediate response that he'd been able to give, so we now had a new client to look after on our return to base.
Never again will I be able to wheel out the female war-cry "What on earth do you need that for???" when he's tempted in the duty free gadget emporium.
On the brighter side, I can now push for more time on the beach, as we're always in touch with the office.

It's all a matter of balance I suppose. I know there's this great theory that if you leave all communication devices behind you'll escape and have a truly relaxing holiday. It doesn't work for me.

I can't relax unless I'm able to check my email regularly, at least daily. Being self-employed means being available and who knows when an opportunity like your husband's New York one will come along again.

It's different if you've got an organisation to provide backup when you're on holiday, at least a secretary to tell callers when you'll be back and who has a means of getting hold of you if it's REALLY urgent. Then you can relax. It's not so easy if you are your own secretary, because as far as the world's concerned you're just not answering the phone or responding to emails.
