The economics of Ibiza clubbing

So where does the money come from and where does it go? In this month’s “A Desk In The Sun” column for The Guardian I look at the way clubs in Ibiza are run from a business perspective. Well, I look to a limited degree because the whole process is far from transparent.

Anybody who thinks there’s any resemblance between an Ibiza club and a British city nightclub is in for a surprise. For a start the amounts of money involved in clubbing on the Spanish party island are staggering, as you’ll see.

[Unfortunately I have had to stop publishing the full text of my Guardian articles because they could interfere with my Google search rankings. The crawlers look for original content and, although I own the copyright, the columns have obviously been published elsewhere.]

In a strange way the discos here have replaced the end-of-the-pier shows that used to entertain the Brits during their annual holidays. Just as the seaside variety theatres were dark for most of the year, so it is with the clubs in the "clubbing capital of the world".
