Analysis of question 13 answers
If you moved abroad what sort of friends would you hope to make?
a. Mostly locals. I hate the whole ex-pat scene
This is many peoples’ dream before they move overseas, but even if you’re fluent in the language of your new country it’s not always as straightforward as it sounds. Particularly in rural areas you may find that the extended family is the centre of social life. And that’s certainly something you don’t have with you.
b. People from the UK. They’re the only ones who really understand where I come from.
You may be missing out on local culture and it’s easy to patronise, but Brits have run their own social scene since even before the days of the Raj. Even Brits who hate the ex-pat scene generally end up making friends with other Brits… ones who also hate the ex-pat scene.
c. Whoever drinks in the local bar
You may want to avoid becoming that sad cultural stereotype, the alcoholic ex-pat.
d. It’s not something I’ve really thought about. I’d just play it by ear
This is probably the best attitude. You don’t really know how your social life is going to develop until you’ve moved. Bringing prejudices with you doesn’t help you enjoy a life overseas.
